How to Capture a Windows 7 image with LANDesk Management Suite 9.0
(A little thanks for you is a big gift for me)

Install and activate the Windows AIK for LANDesk 9.0 OS Deployment
This section contains the steps required to capture an image of Windows 7 using IMAGEW.EXE v2 with OSD. It is intended to be used by experienced LANDesk administrators as a reference and does not go into detail on the process. The details will be covered later in this document. Following are the steps required to capture the image:
- Validate WINPE license if it has not already been done. For help with validating WINPE,
- Create an OSD script to capture the Windows 7 image.
- Add the OSD capture script to the PXE Boot Menu.
- Install a PXE Representative on the subnet where the computer will be imaged. LANDesk requires at least one PXE Representative per subnet for PXE booting computers.
- Prepare the Windows 7 computer for capturing the image.
- Run SYSPREP.EXE to prepare the image for capturing.
- PXE boot the Windows 7 computer and capture the image.
Validate WINPE License
For help with validating WINPE,
Create an OSD script to capture the Windows 7 image
1. Open the Operating System Deployment (OSD) tool in the LANDesk Console by selecting Tools | Distribution | OS Deployment.
2. In the OSD tool, right-click All OSD Scripts and select the New Windows PE Configuration option.
3. Select the Capture Image option and click OK.
4. On the General page, enter a name and a description for the capture script. Then click on Credentials.
5. On the Credentials page, enter a domain user and password for a user that has access to the imaging tool and to the image share where the images will be stored. The user will need modify rights. The image share can be located anywhere that the computer being imaged can access. Click on Image information.
6. On the Image information page, select LANDesk Imagew V2 from the Image type drop-down list.
7. Enter the UNC path to the location where the image will be stored. The image share is not setup by default and will need to be created.
8. Enter the UNC path to the imaging tool. The path shown is the default location for the imaging tool.
9. Specify the partition which is the System or C drive. With a default install of Windows 7, the System partition is 2 because Windows 7 creates a 100 MB partition as the first partition.
10. Click Save.
11. Click OK.
Add the OSD capture script to the PXE Boot Menu
1. In the LANDesk Console, select Tools | Distribution | PXE Boot Menu.
2. In the OSD tool, click the OSD script and drag it to the PXE Boot Menu tool and drop it on the PXE Boot Menu. If the LANDesk tools are tabbed, drag the OSD script to the PXE Boot Menu tab which will activate the PXE Boot Menu tool so that the script can be dropped on the menu.
3. Click the Update button.
Install a PXE Representative
Instructions for installing a PXE Representative is in the LANDesk Console help (F1) in the section titled "Deploying PXE Representatives". Or, go there: HOW TO DEPLOY PXE Representative
Prepare the Windows 7 computer for capturing the image
1. Install Windows 7 on a computer or get a computer that already has Windows 7 installed.
Note: Install the OS to the smallest partition possible so that the image can be deployed to as many different hard drive sizes in the environment as possible.
2. After the OS is installed, configure the OS with any Company requirements.
3. Install OS patches that are currently available as this will save you time in the long run by not having to install them on multiple computers after the image is deployed.
4. Install all applications that are common to all users in the Company that this image will be deployed for their use.
Note: Do not install the LANDesk agent on the computer. The agent will be installed after the image is deployed.
Run SYSPREP.EXE to prepare the image for capturing
SYSPREP.EXE is located in the Windows\System32\Sysprep directory on the Windows 7 computer.
In 9.0 SP3, the computer can be syspreped in Audit Mode without the Generalize box checked or it can be syspreped in OOBE mode with the Generalize box checked.
In 9.0 SP2, the computer must be syspreped in Audit without the generalize option. The easiest way to Sysprep Windows 7 in Audit mode is to run "SYSPREP.EXE /audit" from Start | Run on the Windows 7 computer. This will Sysprep the OS, put it in AUDIT mode and then shutdown the computer.
Another method to accomplish this, would be to run SYSPREP.EXE and select Enter System Audit Mode from the System Cleanup Action drop-down list. Make sure the Generalize box is unchecked and select Shutdown from the Shutdown Options drop-down list. Then click OK. See the following screenshot:
Note: Make sure the computer is not rebooted into the Windows 7 OS after SYSPREP.EXE is executed or you will have to repeat this step.
PXE boot the Windows 7 computer and capture the image
1. PXE boot the computer. Follow the computer manufacturers instructions on how to PXE Boot the computer. This requires configuring the BIOS settings to do a Network boot.
2. Press F8 when the option comes up when the computer is booted. The PROXY IP address should be the IP address of the PXE Representative for the subnet.
3. Select WinPE Menu in the list and press enter.
4. Wait for WINPE to load.
5. Select the OSD capture script (Capture_Windows_7_Imagew) that was created previously and click OK.
6. Wait for the image to be captured. When the capture is complete the computer will restart.
Conclusion
The steps outlined in this document provide the user with the information required to capture a Windows 7 image using IMAGEW.EXE v2 for use with LANDesk OSD or Provisioning.
